Post Re: 2011 Gun Season
so how did everyone make out? I was bowhunting on my farm for 10 days and saw a lot of deer but nothing that I wanted to shoot. Nothing but spikes, 4 and 5 pointers. I missed a jake on saturday afternoon. On monday morning walking into the stand in the dark I was confronted by a beast of an 8 pointer. He was one of 2 deer I was holding out for. As I was walking in I hear a grunt to my left. I put the light on him & he is 10 yards facing me! He puts his head down and lets out a long grunt and proceeds to bird dog me. I let out a loud "HEY!" and smacked the bushes with my bow. He popped his head up and started coming at me again. By this point he is only 7 or 8 yards away and im crapping in my pants! Thankfully the wind shifted and he got a nose full of me and blew and took off only a few short yards. I kept walking up the trail and got downwind of him and whew! He stunk like a rutting buck! I kept walking and I could hear him paralleling me all the way to the stand only about 40 yards and grunting with each step. I high tailed it to my stand and once it was light enough to see I smashed the horns together and bleated, snort-wheezed, and grunted my fool head off to no avail. Never saw him again during the light of day. During the week was warm and deer movement was limited to the morning and late evenings. Opening day of gun season I had 3 does and a button, a 4 point and a small 8 pass by at 30 yards. I certainly gave my fair share of free passes out this week! Here is a pic of the big 8.

Good luck to everybody that will be out there this coming weekend. I heard good stories and not so good stories and here's mine in one word....SLOW. I had one decent buck sneak up on me behind a huge tree during bow season, didn't know he was there, blew my call and he spooked and ran and I passed up a 6 during bow. Opening day of gun I did a 12 hour sit Saturday, hunted Sunday morning, afternoon and Monday morning only to see one button buck and one fawn! I hope Chenango County will bring me some luck! Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving everybody.

I went out yesterday morning and saw a bobcat. That was it. I will get out tomorrow sometime. Been a great season for me despite not having a punched tag.
